Ainslie Sauvao Effective engagement of Pacific families and Communities
Ainslie Sauvao, Pasifika liaison coordinator at St Patrick’s College Wellington, discusses a holistic approach to teaching and learning, referring to the proverb “it takes a village to raise a child” as a key notion behind the successes she has seen at St Pats.
Ainslie talks about the culture of inclusion referring to the way teachers, students and their whānau become part of the wider community, with everyone contributing to the education of the child together. She discusses the way a school community wraps around a child and young adult to provide support and to help nurture a desire to learn and succeed. Ainslie also emphasises how important it is for people involved in teaching students to know the whole student, and to become involved in that student’s life.
Ainslie says that at St Patrick’s College they are successfully thinking about teaching and learning as part of a wider cultural discussion incorporating the whole network of their community into their discourse around education.
