Combining theory and practice through critical reflection
Nici Rousseau, Senior lecturer in the Education Faculty at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, describes her work on reflective practice with students who are training to become Early Childhood teachers. Nici was particularly interested in critical reflection as she wanted to enable the students to reflect on their own practice, and bring theory and practice together through their reflection. Nici explains her research work with final year B.Ed. students in four universities, using focus groups, individual lecturers and teacher educators who were involved with curriculum design and teaching experience. The intent was to see how they used critical reflection to make the links between the theoretical input and what happens in the classroom, and how they use it with the students to build up their own confidence in terms of becoming a critical reflector.
