Multiple Pathways – A structural response to youth disengagement – Dr Stuart Middleton
It’s time to challenge the academic-vocational divide and judgements about who ‘fits’ onto each of these tracks. This session will focus on a set of characteristics that define a “multiple pathways” approach to creating a seamless and engaging journey for every student through the education system and into the wider world of careers and employment. The characteristics are derived from Dr Stuart’s Middleton extensive experience and research around the key issues of youth disengagement and transitions. He describes multiple pathways for learners as being academic, vocational, general, and technical, all at the same time. There are no ‘dead ends’ or single destinations – all pathways can lead to further learning and qualifications and/or employment. The workshop explores the learner pathways in your own educational context and supports you to critique these in relation to a multiple pathways approach.
